Books at less than a dollar …

A week ago at Ubungo in Dar es Salaam. Found two youngmen selling books at Tshs. 1,000 (about US $0.70), that is, less than a dollar. It did not matter which title you chose. It did not matter whether the book was full colour or single colour, hard bound or paper back, science books or fiction, adult books of children’s books. And several people were there bending to pick a book or two and move away. Only if it were possible to sell books at this price … and then have people read them … I’m sure that our world would be transformed a great deal, especially in developing countries like my country, Tanzania. Books are engines of change – positive change – growth. It doesn’t matter – a book is a book even if it is second hand. The contents are always the same!
