Congratulations Dr Asha Rose Migiro for being named UN Deputy Secretary General, thus becoming second in command in an institution on which many people have fixed their hopes as being their platform for bringing and maintaining equality and stability in the world.
Since you have been an up-coming diplomat and have sufficient and strong educational background, I don’t have to enumerate responsibilities that await you in your new post.
However, there is one request that I wish to ask you to take to the United Nations, please use all your convincing powers to influence the UN to put to an end the death penalty. I undersand that the new UN SG, Mr Ban-Ki Moon was quoted recently as saying that this (death penalty) is a matter to be decided upon by individual countries/states, but I think it is the responsibility of the UN to decide once and for all that capital punishment is stopped. All nations should abolish the sentence.
The hanging of former Iraq leader, Saddam Hussein, for example, was, in my opinion, wrong. He should have been sentenced to a life sentence instead so as to really pay for what he did to his victims during the time he was in power.
So, I wish to congratulate you for your new post, this has been a great honour to you, our country and other developing nations.
Let’s end the death penalty once and for all for there to be peace and stability in the world.
Congratulations.
